Online Scoreboard
« on: April 06, 2022, 08:17:49 AM »

I came across a couple of these Online Scorebards. Does anyone use them in contests? Is there an advantage to using them? Are they required for entry in contests?

The online scoreboards give you a real-time accumulation of contest station’s scores so you know where you stand in relation to those competing in the same category at any point in time. It seems to be most useful for those big gun stations that are “in it to win it” to check how each one is doing. For the smaller stations or casual contesters, it could be useful to real-time check a friend’s or long-time rival’s score with similar station configurations. Friendly competition to encourage you to keep going.

You are not required to be in one in order to compete and submit your score to the sponsor.

A lot of ops around here like the online scoreboards - they feel it helps them increase "butt in chair" time as they compete with a friend in the same class.

There is also hope that those type of scoreboards will attract new hams, or at least new contesters, from the younger online gaming crowd.

Professional bike races have long had "games within the game" - bonuses for best sprinter, best climber, special cash prizes on certain laps, etc.  Since only a small percentage of he entrants really have a chance to win, lets the rest focus on mini-competitions.

The Online Scoreboards have gained a lot of popularity over the past few years from both casual and serious competitors. Many say that seeing where everyone stands during the contest motivates them to stay in the chair and keep pushing to chase the next guy above them on the board. Anything to promote more people on the bands is a good thing.

I look at it differently, and have never or will ever use it. Contests are a competition, and there's no way I'm going to let any of my competitors know how I'm doing and give them info like qso/mult totals, off-times, etc. to motivate them. Personally, I'm motivated by wondering how my competition is doing. I'll operate, you operate, and we'll see who does better. We can exchange logs, numbers and stories after the contest. In the last 10 yrs or so, contesting took a left turn and became transparent about everything. I'm all in favor of sharing information but AFTER the contest.

There's been talk about if sponsors should require competitors use the online scoreboard, but it hasn't gained much traction. If it was ever required, I would stop sending in my log, not even a check log, and just compete for myself.

I can't see any way that will ever happen. It will always strictly be an option for those that see an advantage to using it, a minority. A requirement to subscribe to it would cut down in participation and reported scores.

Famous last words ;D.
