Vanity Call Wait Time
« on: April 15, 2022, 07:43:43 PM »

I filed for a new callsign a couple of days ago, and I believe my license will be automatically renewed whether or not it is granted.  Per AE7Q's website, my new callsign (W7XTV, the first of four I requested) has already been assigned to me and the "Redlight Review" (whatever that is) has been completed.

My question is, now that it apparently has been assigned, why does it take so long to get into the ULS database?  Obviously I can't start using it until it shows in ULS.  IIRC, the start-to-finish time is 18-19 days, depending on whether there's a Federal holiday in there.

I remember mine took about 2 weeks or so to show up. I just used my original call until it showed up.

The new call isn't legal until it shows up in the ULS database, regardless of what any other source says.  I'm still WW7KE until then.  "Officially," it's supposed to take 18-19 days to complete the process.  But I've heard it can take much less time.  We'll see.

Kinda reminds me of when I was waiting for my Novice license in 1970.  Little Print Shop sent me samples with my new call on the envelope in about a month.  I still couldn't get on the air until I received the real license from the FCC.  It took 6 weeks in those days.

Right on the money.  W7XTV took affect this morning, and WW7KE is no more.  Now, how do I get it changed here and in QRZ?

Regardless of various people's recollections, the ULS is predictable. This shows there are still some folks who really know.

QRZ's listing will take care of itself. I don't know how that works if you have a QRZ subscription or login--you'll have to ask them.

For eHam, go to "My Account." (On the home page, click the down arrow next to your call on the navigation bar at the top. Note that you have to be logged in to do this.) On the second line of the page displaying your account, there's a "Change" button next to your callsign. Click this and request a change of your login name to your new call. This will have to be reviewed by the administrators.

Done.  Thanks for the help.  Shouldn't be a problem since my new call is already in the ULS database.

The change was made here and in QRZ.  Unfortunately, the ARRL locked me out when I tried to change my username there.  Can't log in under either my old or new call.

Just give the ARRL a phone call; they'll help straighten it out.

Congrats on the new call!  Interesting suffix, does it represent anything significant?

It straightened itself out a couple days later.  I had to update my password twice under my new call, but it worked.

A few reasons why I changed:
1.  I decided to do it now, after thinking about it for a long time, before the $35 fee kicked in.  ;D

2.  After almost 19 years as WW7KE, I got sick and tired of my call being misunderstood during SSB contests.  It was time for a change.

Why W7XTV?
1.  I wanted a W7 call.  I am old-school enough that I believe one's call should reflect his/her home district.

2.  After 52 years as a ham, I wanted an "old timer" prefix.  Just because.  I've held 2x2 calls since 1990.  As an Advanced, I'm not eligible for a 1x2 or 2x1, and I don't want to go through that "scavenger hunt" even if I ever do upgrade to Extra.

3.  "Whiskey Seven Xray Tango Victor" should punch through in SSB contests much better than "Whiskey Whiskey Seven Kilo Echo" did.  Hard consonants tend to be more audible in QRM, at least from my experience.

4.  The "TV" comes from the following:  I'm working on a design for a low-resolution, low frame rate TV system that can be legally used on HF in the US, with a 6 kHz bandwidth.  This is similar to work that has been done the last few years in Australia and the UK, but they're allowed wider bandwidths.  I also remember the Medium Scan TV effort of the 1978-80 era that was not successful because it was too wide, and the technology was not there yet.  It's in the early-design stage and will be all software.  At least in theory, it is doable with the right line and frame rate.  I work on it whenever I have the time.

4a.  The "X" in my call reflects the pre-war experimental TV callsigns that went away in 1945.  However, this call would not have been assigned in Arizona in that era because it was in the 6th district before the war.  Oh, well.
