Help...Setting up FT8 on my Yaesu FT-920
« on: April 20, 2022, 12:53:33 PM »

I need some advice on configuring my FT-920 for FT8/WSJT-X. I have heard the others had had issues doing this. I have a HP Elite Desk 800 G1 PC with Win 10. It has a serial RS-232 port that I plan to build a cable for connecting to the FT-920s CAT connector. the PC also has a 3D USB Sound Card module. So my first question is how to connect the sound card module's mic & spkr jacks to the FT-920. I was thinking of building a cable to go into the DATA Port on the FT-920.

I have also read Mike Jones' (G0MGX) forum comments on the correct setup for the Data mode (Use DATA-USB, with the ASKF-SKF switch in the ASFK position). I also plan to install a clock sync program (timesynctool.com) along with the WSJT-X program. Am I missing anything? Is there a better approach?

I use my '920 for digital modes, but I use a Signalink USB for sound. It makes life easier for me. If interested, the Signalink sound settings are these:

Computer Sound Settings
At the Signalink USB Front Panel
TX – 12 o’clock position
RX – 12 o’clock position
DLY – fully counterclockwise

At your computer, right click the speaker icon
Click Sounds
Playback Tab
Signalink USB Audio Codec (Default)
Properties – Levels – 0.0dB
Enhancements – Check ‘Disable All Enhancements’
Advanced – 16 bit 44100 Hz (CD Quality)
Exclusive Mode – Both checked

Recording Tab
Signalink USB Audio Codec (Default)
Properties – Levels – Positive number as close to zero
Advanced – 1 channel, 16 bit, 44100Hz, (CD Quality)
Exclusive Mode – Both Checked

Sounds Tab – Sound Scheme – No Sounds

Communications Tab – Do Nothing

Only one suggestion for both N8EUI and K8CEB:  When setting both Playback and Recording tabs/Advanced -
The Signalink USB Audio Codec digital rate should be set to 1 channel, 16 bits, 48 kHz
There is a HUGE computing overhead penalty if your machine has to first convert a 44.1 kHz incoming digital audio signal to 48.0 kHz before performing the actual signal decoding analysis unless you are using Mac OS.

FURTHER Mac OS COMMENT:  Some (but not all) Mac OS WSJTx software installs may still insist on using 44.1 kHz instead of the 48.0 setting that is required on the Windows installs.  This detail is buried deep in the WSJTx online users guide and on recent printed Signalink USB instructions, and some folks do miss it.
