Longer nmo mount?
« on: May 03, 2022, 05:43:23 AM »

Does anyone make or can fabricate a trunk lid mount to be longer than what’s readily available? My Tucsons rear door opens too deep for a standard trunk lip mount, and short of a “permanent” mag mount, the only way I can get around that is to have a longer mount, meaning the antenna nmo mount would be further away from the mounts trunk lid curve and set screws.

I have no suggestions on a modification, but I found that the only flat surface that was long enough to  securely hold a Diamond K-400 lip mount was along the front hood surface, near the front of the vehicle.   Are there any alternative mounting points that you might consider?

I have a glass roof with about a 6 inch metal plate at the rear where the hatch opens. A mag mount can sit there just fine, but was hoping for a more permanent mount. If I mounted a regular trunk mount nmo, when I open the hatch it would smash the antenna. I can’t see putting it on the front hood, I think pit looks hideous mounted there. I would put pics on here showing what I mean if I knew how.

I know of many front hood mounts that work well.  I had one on an SUV for a while until we got rid of the vehicle. A lot of people have them that way because the other half of the family has categorically put a stop to drilling a hole in the roof of a new vehicle.  That kind of a mount may offend your sense of aesthetics but what's more important, getting your radio operation or having the vehicle look pristine?

Actually both, hence why I wanted a longer trunk lip mount. The mag mount will work, just not as ideal as I’d like. Fabrication seems to be in order.

If you can devise something that will work for you, that would be best.   If you do go with the mag mount, I would be careful about removing it very often, since at some point it will be guaranteed to scratch the finish.

Never mount antenna on front hood/fender. No professional commercial radio systems installer would advise anyone to do that.

Why? If it is 1/2 wave it should not matter, no?
