Ten Tec Orion II and Model 712 Digital Interface
« on: May 12, 2022, 01:10:16 PM »

I have a Ten Tec Orion II and am trying to run FT8 and other digital modes with it.

The instructions for the Model 712 digital interface say its "Plug and Play."  I beg to differ.  I have owned it for several years and it's never worked right for me.

I have set up my radio and computer EXACTLY as the  instructions say.  It appears to be de-coding, but not transmitting at all.  I am able to copy RTTY and FT-8.

I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

There is no way to know what is wrong until we get down to specifics. Lets start with how did you plan to key the radio? Does the radio key up? If the radio does key up, are we to assume then that no power is put out. The next question is have you checked for transmitted audio at the analog audio port on the interface to the radio? Do you have a scope or some other means of checking for the presence of this audio?  A million questions, but we have nothing to go on yet.

What did you use for a Network time protocol program on the PC? How well are you matching the rest of the users in the world in the DT column on WSJT-x?

See how these questions just go on and on.  To solve this problem, The first thing you do is decide for sure if it is working or not (in other words, what makes you think it is "not transmitting"?. Then form a hypothesis for WHY it is not working.  Start with the "does the radio key up" question.

If you want to talk with me on the phone then send me a PM or email and we can exchange phone numbers.

Are you sure you have the TX AUDIO SOURCE to LINE ?

I use one with my Eagle and it works well.

Is the Orion ever going into transmit ?  If not it sounds like a software setup issue, the PTT  signal that keys the radio comes in from the 712 through the DIN connector, so the SOFTWARE needs to be told to key the radio when you want to transmit..

OK, I checked the radio setup in WSJT-X on my PC, when I set it up with the 712 I took the easy route and checked VOX instead of messing with any of the PTT options.

It just works with the Eagle.  Try the VOX option with the Orion.

I'll try VOX.  That makes sense.

There was no mention of that in the any of the instructions in the model 712 instructions or the manual with the radio.
