Kenwood TS-940S xmit problem.
« on: May 20, 2022, 06:59:42 AM »

Hello. I got this from a swapmeet last week and do not remember the sellers' callsign so I can't contact him. Here's the problems I've found. The internal 2 batteries are most likely dead. I have those arriving in a few days.I did reset the processor inside so the LCD display comes back on (for awhile). I also did a full reset by holding down A=B while powering up.   The main issue is when I key the mic in SSB mode it has a hum and is sending out 10-20w erratically. I'm going to call HRO Portland to see if they know of any repair facilities that can help me. I've contacted Kenwood...no reply and suspect they may not service this older rig. Any help appreciated.

Look at the microphone cables and grounding.

If you disconnect the mic from the radio, turn the Mic Gain all the way down and hit the Send switch...what happens?

Look under product reviews, amateur radio repair. There are several Kenwood repair guys with good reputations.

I recommend contacting Sultantronics, in Sultan, WA.  That rig is too heavy to ship but Sultantronics is relatively local to you.

website: sultantronics.com.  Bruce is an excellent technician and very honest.  (Former Icom Tech) He can probably advise you over the phone on whether a cost effective repair is possible.

Good luck.  Tom, NU7J

I should have clarified regarding the mic. I bought a new MC-43 hand mic and also have a D-104 wired for Kenwood. Rig is grounded and connected to dummy load. I will contact Sultantronics for sure and chat with Bruce. Thanks all! I'll follow up with my findings. 73.
