Kenwood TS-590S not transmitting.
« on: May 21, 2022, 06:57:02 AM »

I have a problem with my TS-590S, the red LED goes on, but the radio won't transmit.

Right now on HF I'm only using digital digital modes, FT8 mostly.
I'm in a rented apartment, on the 5th floor, out of 9, and with no roof access.
My antenna is a magnetic whip that I sick on our AC unit out my bedroom window.
Since I don't know CW (working on that), digital is all that works for me.

In the last 2+ years I've managed nearly 3000 contacts with that setup.

Now, whenever I try to transmit, I see no output on the display.
No bars at all for the S / PWR / ALC / SWR.
I can receive just fine, I see bars on the display, and on my computer in WSJT-X I can see other stations transmitting.
However whenever I try to transmit, the red light goes on but all the bars disappear.
I'm assuming that nothing is going out because no one answers me.

I connected to a dummy load and transmitted with my mic, the red light goes on but still no bars.
I did a factory reset, and tried again, still didn't work.

I did a lot of searching on the internet, but I couldn't find anything that looked like my problem.

I hope that someone here can help me out.

It sounds as though the RF output (PA) transistors in your TS-590 have become defective. If you are capable of troubleshooting and doing the work yourself then you can likely replace them yourself. Otherwise, you will need to send your radio out for repair.....

Have you checked your output power setting: PWR (TX MONI) to make certain it hasn't been changed?

Make sure you have the USB Audio Codec chosen on the computer and not the computers internal sound card. Since the 590 uses the USB for cat control and audio so even though it does go into TX via the CAT command but no audio to the radio because the computer thinks it needs to use the computer's builtin sound card.

Put the radio in FM mode and hit the XMIT button on the radio.  Are you seeing any power out?  If so, the finals in the radio are good and the problem is with a menu setting or the software.  If you are not, it could be that the power is turned down in the menus, or some software setting problem.

Menu 63 should be set to USB, if you are using a USB cable to the computer for both rig control and audio in and out.  Menu 64 needs to be set high enough for the audio coming out of the computer to register with the radio.  On my TS590S it is set to 3.  On the computer, I have the speaker output set to 3 or 4.  That gives me 100 watts out with very little ALC reading on the meter.

Also, on the WSJT-X software, make sure the power slider control way on the right hand side of the messages didn't get pushed to the bottom.  It should be near the top for full power out.

As was mentioned earlier, in the settings menu on the software, under the audio tab, make sure both are set to CODEC or something like that.

PWR (TX MONI) is at 100W.
Menu 60 (TX Inhibit ) is Off.
Menu 63 is set to USB.
Menu 64 was 1, changed to 4, didn't help.

I had issues with the USB Audio Codec changing on me in the past, so I renamed the devices to "TS-590S USB Input" and "TS-590S USB Output" that way I can always see at a glance that they are selected.

Now we get to the interesting part:
When I put the radio in FM (also AM) mode and hit the XMIT button on my Mic, I see bars.
It's only in Data mode that the problem occurs. Thanks AF5CC.

I'm working now, so when I get off I'll see if removing/replacing the USB cable helps.
Also I'll go over all the settings I need for FT8. I did a factory reset, so I need to figure out if I missed anything when I reset the rig settings.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to try just about anything.
