CQ WPX CW Contest This Weekend
« on: May 26, 2022, 04:55:37 AM »

Starting at 0000z on Friday 27 May, the CW portion of the bands will erupt with all kinds of strange callsigns as the 2022 CQ WPX CW contest kicks off.

If you just want to play around, the exchange is RST and QSO serial number. If you want to increase your score, prefixes are the only multipliers and contacts on 40/80/160M are worth twice as much as contacts on 10/15/20M.

Full rules here.

CQ Magazine Policy on Russia, Belarus, and Separatist Donbas Region

The policy implemented by the Editors of CQ Magazine via their 17 March 2022 press release remains in effect for all CQ sponsored contests including WPX CW 2022.

It's absolutely idiotic that Russian amateurs are banned from participating in radio contests. Theoretically not banned, but any QSOs they make will not count for either party.

Tom,

Early into the war, I agreed with your position. However, as I learn more about the misinformation campaign that Russian citizens are forced accept, I believe there is merit in putting in place restrictions that the average Russian citizen must face - not as a punishment but rather as a prodding toward enlightment. Hopefully the result will be that the average Russian citizen does their own due diligence to understand why they are being shunned by the world and as a result learning what their government is really doing.

The contest:

Activity was great, conditions not so much - high A index much of the time, solar flux dropped like a rock over the weekend.

I made about 550 QSOs in a total of 8 hours of operating, mix of running and chasing cluster spots. Since prefixes are the only multipliers, working US stations for 1 point and new prefix doesn't always pay off if you pass on too many 3/4/6 point QSOs from DX stations - this year I think my average points per QSO was too low, had great runs at times but lots of 1 pointers.

It's kind of funny in the wpx contest that US stations get 4 points for working Ontario on 40m, but only 3 points for a really tough contact into China on 15m :)

I kinda like strange rules in contests, like the Stew Perry 160 using grid squares and distance scoring, or the long exchange in Sweepstakes.

I also like serial number exchange contests - actually having to copy something other than callsign and thwarting the Call History files.

Throw in the sometimes bizarre prefixes that show up and WPX is usually fun - I do usually make sure to do a late am sweep or 40 and 80 and work the VEs CQing there!

I have a club call (KK3TN) I forgot to trot out for WPX. K3 is not rare, KK3 is - can really tell the difference after I get spottted!

But, for a US op, Memorial Day weekend (unless bad wx cooperates...) is usually a tough weekend to put in a lot of time.
