simple logging program
« on: May 26, 2022, 11:16:10 AM »

I am looking for a simple, spreadsheet-based logging program. Preferably just a template that I can import into Google sheets and export the output as ADIF.

I am not interested in anything fancy.
I am not interested in maps or multimedia.
I do not need to greet callers with their first name (I always introduce myself anyway)
I am not interested in "the best" or "GREAT FOR CONTESTING" or "THE BEST for FIELD DAY"
I am not interested in "just copy this java script into the AD-48(c) registry ..."
And above all, I am not interested in spending three hours on this. I have zero interest in computer programming or getting into the innards of either my computer or a new program.

I just want something I can use in Windows and/or Android for my POTA submissions.

Thanks in advance,

Angelo

Take a look at the N3FJP series of logging programs (n3fjp.com).  There is a general logging program and a series of logging programs for specific contests and events.

Thanks, but...

There are dozens of products like that, also with 87 pages of directions and a huge learning curve. I'm not interested. I just want to transfer my paper log into ADIF so I can submit my POTA data.

Please do not misinterpret this as nastiness, I'm just tired of suggestions that involve the equivalent of taking a class or reading an entire book. I.e. every bloody thing having to do with radio.

I have no interest in fancy computer programs, color, graphics, bells and whistles. All I want is to transfer the files from my paper logbook to something that POTA will accept. If it involves a simple spreadsheet like Google Sheets (or equivalent, like Zoho, Libre) all the better. I do not want or need any other capability. I have no interest in awards or contests.

This should be an easy request but it appears to have stumped 30+ readers.

Now that I've burned that bridge...

Have you looked here?

May be something useful, maybe not?

Fast Log Entry (FLE) is a text editor and logger to enter QSO data as easily and quickly as possible without redundancy in real time or offline.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

I've poked around at least a dozen loggers. I don't need or want a logger, I just want to be able to convert .xls (or paper logs via a text file) to .adif, but this is apparently impossible. I understand we can't get there from here.

If anyone knows of such a utility please email me. I may check this thread again if I remember, but I'm getting rid of this browser tab.

You said you were looking for a simple logging program...   Really you just want to save your xls into an adif file.   Here ya go.

The best logging program I found is N3FJP.
Works with windows.
I drop Ham Radio Deluxe.

Instructions for virtually all of the N3FJP logging programs are one page long.

Like MacArthur, I have returned.

I found what I was looking for: a program that allows creation of ADIF files by hand for submission to POTA. The program is free and available from ACBL:

http://www.arrl.org/tqsl-download

This program is used to create a file suitable for submission to Parks on the Air. If, like me, you got stuck in your journey through POTA- and SOTA-land due to logging requirements this program is the solution.

In addition, I have a query in to ARRL about a utility for converting .xls files to .adif. If such a program exists I will create an Excel template and post a link to it somewhere. I will NOT post it to those crazy download sites that prompt you to download everything but the program you want (eg the one mentioned in a post here).

There is another solution as well, an excel-based template that I am still working on. "I shall return" again if I get that to work.

And finally, if I find a simple logging program with .adif output, one that does not require mastering an entire screen's worth of variables, I will post that link as well.

Thanks to everyone who suggested various options for me.

If you are looking for a simple spreadsheet: Kelly Klaas K7SU provided one for free on his web site. I use it myself and quite like it; the only thing missing is the ADIF converter, which can easily be added. Kelly also produced a video with helpful instructions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98vTO4uF_Wg

He has since pulled the spreadsheet, but you can probably still find it somewhere.
Apparently he has replaced the Excel spreadsheet by an ODT file, to support other platforms as well. I have not checked out the new version, though.

F4GFT: The K7SU software still lives at:

https://www.k7mva.org/software.html

This is a spreadsheet-type logger that seems to work in Gulag Sheets. I've queried K7SU on the .adif conversion utility.

He also has templates for popular ham events.

While it doesn’t convert a spreadsheet to ADIF, this little Android or iThing app will run on a mobile phone or tablet. It is specifically written for use while portable operating.

I use it on holiday and it is easy enough to “live log” on an iPhone SE while in QSO in CW. You export an ADIF file from it in 2 or 3 clicks by email attachment.
