I'm surprised but happy this request resulted in so much discussion. Thank you for all the great suggestions. I have prepared and submitted 4 logs using HAMRS. Let's see how that goes.
IMO our great hobby is in desperate need of products that are functional, accessible, and do not require a steep learning curve. We are in danger of going the way of contract bridge, a game that was wildly popular 30-40 years ago but which is currently experiencing death-by-demographics.
We are not going to attract many young people through our current fixation on Rube Goldberg-esque systems with dozens of wires and connectors, software/equipment that takes many hours to master, or our 1980s-era relationship with computers.
Some of you are reading this and thinking, "Dammit that's how I learned, that's the HAM way. If he doesn't like it let him start his own hobby (or his own club, etc.). Hark! The tubes are now warm enough for me to transmit. Yippee."
And that is 80% of the problem.
