Ft 8 with 7300
« on: May 31, 2022, 02:47:44 PM »

My new 7300 will rd ft8 but when I enable tx, a box comes up saying input audio missing. I’ve tried 2 computers and set up input mic in codec 2 mic. I’ve checked and both speakers and mic are correct on laptop. Both computers say same. I’ve changed laptops, cables. Any help will be appreciated

Are you in a digital mode on the rig, and have you enabled the appropriate audio settings on the rig?

You'll find several YouTube videos detailing step by step how to set up your IC-7300 and FT8, they should be easy to find. KE0OG, ARRL's new technical editor and columnist, posted a video on this subject a year or so ago.

Yes. In usb D. It worked for 2 weeks fine. All of sudden, it can’t see input audio.

If you OS is Win10, check your computer audio settings.  Win10 updates like to mess with those settings.

The last time I had an issue like that I reinstalled the Sound Blaster soundcard drivers with the audio cables hooked up.  Otherwise there seemed to a conflict between the motherboard soundcard and the optional board and the audio would disappear shortly after transmit.

Indeed.  My TS-990 did exactly the same thing as the OP's 7300.  I had to go to Settings in the computer and raise the audio output at the USB connector in order to get ALC indication on the radio.  It had been fine the previous night.  I suspect a sneaky overnight Windows update.

Sorry for asking a silly question (maybe): since the IC7300 has a USB port, why you are speaking of audio interface? I thought PC and radio could be connected directly through USB for digital modes... isn't this the case?
I am asking also because IC7300 could be my next rig and FT8 is of interest, too...

Yes, you can operate all digital modes simply by using the IC-7300 USB port.

AND on top of that not only can the 7300 with a simple USB cable and N1MM+ software operate true FSK RTTY, it can operate true A1 CW over that same cable. Although more than 1 have doubted my veracity on that statement, and I can prove it. :)

Rumors are that it can operate also SSB provided that the ICOM software is used, which runs only on Windows.
Is this confirmed?

The IC-7300 has a built-in sound card, which shows up as a USB sound card under Windows when a USB cable is connected between the computer and the rig.  I _think_ it's a "class-compliant" sound card, and doesn't need any special Windows drivers.

Using the "Settings" menu (the "Switch" option, I think), you can tell the rig that it should use that sound card's output as the modulation source when in USB / LSB mode.

You can feed whatever audio you want, from the computer to the rig, by selecting that USB sound card as your Windows audio-output device.

You shouldn't need any Icom software to do all that.

PS -- sorry if this sounds emphatic.  Yesterday, I helped set up an IC-7300 to run FT8 under Windows, and it was pretty quick and easy.  I had the benefit of experience with other rigs, and other modes.

PPS --

I suggest that you set the IC-7300 mode to "USB-Data" for both Rcv and Xmit,

. . . And tell WSJT-X to _not_ change the mode when it transmits.

. . . And tell the IC-7300 to use its internal sound card for "USB-Data".

We scratched our heads for a while, over that.
