melodic morse code
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:20:35 PM »

Years ago I heard an operator who would send melodic Morse code.  I think he was from around Chicago.  I can't remember the phrase he was sending.  I was trying to explain this to a friend.  If anyone understands what I'm trying to find can you point me in the right direction?

'best dx' with the 'dx' sent as a single string was one I remember hearing as a kid.

A crusty old codger with a bug that knows what he's doing and the Lake Erie Swing.

Doing my first thing in the morning reads and just popped this open.

Would be great fun with a straight key. Fun -- and very good/helpful -- for adjusting the spacing and tension on keyer paddles or a bug. Hope at the next hamfest where someone has a lot of keyer paddles to sell and a nice display we can hear these in action.

Thanks and 73

That would be Bill Crane. w9zn Chicago area. He has a lengthy musical warm up before calling cq along with flawless keying.

That would be Bill Crane.

I think I heard him many evenings on 40M. I tried several times to answer his CQs but he never came back to me. I think my 50W signal from a low dipole was probably in his urban backround noise. His legal-limit signal was always big here on the west coast.

Bens best bent wire. Bens best bent wire.

I think it was that plus "tennessee" at the end.  I use this off air.

If you go to YouTube and type in w9zn you will hear Bill in action. I believe he is involved with commercial radio in the Chicago area.
I hear him on from time to time and have had a qso or two with him. If you answer his CQ he will kindly match your speed. A CW gentleman.

UU2 UU2 UU2 with slightly imperfect spacing reminds me of the Lone Ranger.
