Problem with FT-920 Using FT8
« on: June 01, 2022, 03:05:57 PM »

I am trying to get my FT920 to run JT8 on on WSJT-X. I have a db-9 serial cable from the FT-920 CAT connector to my PCs serial connector, and a digital cable from the FT-920s DIGITAL connector through an “Easy Digi” audio isolator to my PCs sound card. I put the radio in the Data-USB mode and start WSJT-X. The system appears to do a good job receiving and displaying the JT8 transactions and the CAT function seems to work. However, every time I try to cq/transmit, the FT-920 goes into transmit but exits the Digital-USB mode. When finishing the transmitting function I must put it back in the Data-USB Mode. So my cqs/transmissions appear to be not getting out (no replies). Does anyone have any ideas?

On the radio settings tab on WSJT-X, where you choose the radio and com port, do you have DATA/PKT selected for mode instead of USB?  I believe the program defaults to USB.

I have an Icom 756PRO and when I run FT4/FT8 I can either put it in regular USB or USB-D for data. I can run it either way and see absolutely no difference between the two. Try it in plain 'ol USB mode and see what happens.

Got it working! In the radio settings in wsjt-x the Mode was set to USB. I changed it to None and now when I TX it stays in Data mode.

Thanks for the help guys!

Not a good idea. on many rigs in USB mode the microphone stays hot so when you transmit it picks up conversations in the room. That is why you hear all those idiots arguing with their wife or the dog barking or the TV running on 14.074. Data mode will usually kill the front panel microphone.
