2-meter indoor antenna
« on: June 02, 2022, 07:07:03 AM »

Apartment living.  No outside access (porch).  Need 2-meter antenna that will sit on window sill or dangle from curtain rod (e.g. J-pole).

Buy a 2-meter 1/2 wave mobile antenna and put it in the window...no ground plane needed for 1/2 wave antennae.

Purchase a Comet GP1, connect a short run of coax then lean the antenna in a corner of the room. If you do not require more than 5 watts to reach your target, a Comet CH-32 connected to the rig is also a good solution.

Many possibilities here. You could build a 2m J-Pole using TV twinlead like this:

Or a simple vertical dipole from coax:

Depends on the size of the window.

For a full-sized picture window, a J-pole or other thin wire antenna
hanging on the back of the curtains works well.

For UHF, a ground plane with 2 radials hanging from a suction cup
on the inside of the window over my desk covered most of the county.
The feedline was about 2' long.

Here are some of my ideas.

I bought a dual-band N9TAX Slim Jim j-pole years ago. My antenna analyzer doesn't cover 70cm so opted for this. Works well.

Another option is a digital hand held and a “hotspot”, or access point node. The nodes are easy to configure and use, no point paying for the ones from dealers, they almost all use Pi-Star and that’s free, with tons of help on their forum.

See http://www.pistar.uk/index.php

All you need is almost any old Raspberry Pi and an MMDVM board from eBay (around $20). Plus, of course, a digital hand held. Many of us have 2 or 3 spare “Pies” in the shack, no need to buy a new one, just ask around. With Pi-Star you only need a few milli Watts from a hand held, so you can use it around the house.

You might try to use non conductive (on the side of the glue) aluminum or copper adesive tape (it should be conductive on the other side) to make the desired antenna of any type attached to a window. Then attach a light coax and attach it to the antenna feedpoint with conductive (also on the side of the glue) aluminum or copper tape. No soldering, just cut and paste ;D

Ahhh, apartment living!
Can I assume you are just trying to get an FM signal out to the local repeaters?... and you have just a picture window?  Who are you trying to contact?  Locals?

Edison Fong - rollup J-pole.

I have one and hit full quieting the local repeater 15 miles away with 3 watts on an HT.

It hangs from the ceiling fan over my office desk.

Here is one I found at the ARRL. It's called 7dB for 7 bucks. It is a small 3 element 2 meter beam. I built one with a piece
of plastic pipe and some aluminum welding rods. Inexpensive and easy to build. Find the plans at http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/9304054.pdf
