« on: June 09, 2022, 10:54:05 AM »

my trusty ft 2800m has suffered a mistossed tool resulting the readout looking like a small caliber slug shot. don't ask me how that happened! how hard and expensive is it to replace the readout?

I tried replacing the display on a unit that had suffered a similar fate.  I never was able to get the replacement display to work at all.  The little 'Zebra' connector that provides the connection between the display and the PCB is impossible to get positioned correctly.  I guess the Yaesu factory has some sort of positioning jig for that operation.

If you have you ever worked with a 'Zebra' connector, you would know that getting the contacts to align between the display and PCB is darn near impossible, hand size not withstanding.  They are not bad if the connector is constrained laterally and the display and PCB have some means of aligning themselves.  Unfortunately, Yaesu has made no provisions for that.
