OUCH! I hope you got a REAL GOOD deal on it. It must cover some parts of the US bands at least?

Yikes on the reply from Yaesu.   That's a fine welcome to a hobby.   Now I have to ask where did you buy the FT-818?  Ebay, used market?   Hopefully not one of the brick and mortar stores like DX Engineering yet if you did buy from one of those I would think they would have a return policy.

check with your local club for radios, sometimes they have equipment from sk's that the resell for the club.
my radio (icom 200 series dual bander) works great. 55 watt output, easily programmable, and i got it for $70.00
thats in my truck.
Plus i was given another because it needed repairs ( new connectors and a resistor)
that one ill use in the shack with the jpole

some good advice is to join your local radio club, they will help you a lot.
and welcome to the world of Amateur radio.

"ERR TRAN" is Yaesu's term for "your doing something wrong"!
Glad you figured it out.
