The real problem with ham communications for regular family conversation is that it fundamentally isn't private.
If you can always handle banalities that you don't want the neighbors to hear (you don't get to assume it's anonymous strangers listening in), then it will be fine.
If you want to talk, even in passing, about Uncle Bill's affair and Aunt Tillie's hysterectomy, you won't find it congenial.
Discussing upcoming vacations is a security problem. You want to broadcast to the world that your home will be unoccupied for a month? I don't even tell that kind of tale on Facebook.
