Friends Remembered - please be more meaningful
« on: June 21, 2022, 03:36:02 PM »

I think the "Friends Remembered" section here in eham.net is a nice feature. If it didn't exist, it would have to be established. This way we always keep our Elmer and deceased HAM friends in good memory. However, I must also be critical: Many obituaries do not include the date of birth, the date of death or the respective year. Nor is there always anything meaningful about the person in it. In my opinion, this is very inadequate and does not do justice to the deceased person. Maybe more attention could be paid to this in the future. Thank you for reading this.

Meaningful and not doing justice to the individual........   So, we should be like this??  Looks meaningful and seems like it did justice to me.  >>>>>     https://www.yahoo.com/news/son-writes-scathing-obituary-dad-151353672.html

I assume that the last post is intended ironically. The obituaries here at Eham pop up at various intervals at the homepage. In most cases the reader does not know when they were written or when the OM/YL died. Was it yesterday, last week or more than 10 years ago?

Therefore, I think it is appropriate to at least mention the date or year of the death. Optimum would also be the birthday or the age. And of some significant statements about the person himself, especially about his or her live as a HAM. Of course, only positive things. Like e.g. this:

Addendum: I have full understanding for the obituary for the father of Mr. Pfaff Jr. I would probably have done the same in his situation. However, such traumatic experiences among radio amateurs are very unlikely and frank and objective obituaries like this are reserved only for the closest relatives.

The worst trauma a radio amateur caused me so far was his incompetence in avoiding splatter through his power amplifier and his poor operating abilities, despite well-meaning assistance. A typical LID, but that is not worth an obituary.
