SWR Meter for vhf/uhf
« on: July 01, 2022, 04:05:58 PM »

I am slowly putting together my first station. Over the last couple of months between hamfests, craigslist, and qrz, I have picked up a Comet GP-3 antenna, a yaesu FT-2980, as well as a Astron rs-20. The only thing I still need is coax and a SWR meter. While I only need about 30 feet of coax, I am going to go with LMR-400 and not have to worry about loss and quality. That leaves the SWR meter. Many brands, styles and price ranges. At this time I am leaning toward a cross needle type of meter, as all information is available with one look without having to use a switch to get all the information. I also plan to do 440 some day so I would like a meter that would cover that band also. At this time the Daiwa CN-501v has caught my eye. At $115, delivered from the Gig-a-Parts, ebay website this is the best price I can find. Good meter, bad meter? Should I go in different direction?
Any thoughts and comments are welcome

I've got a Daiwa 901HP for HF and  CN-901V  for yor application and am happy with them. I could live with the ORANGE V, but that has nothing to with function. BIG face cross needle is a plus.

Get a long piece of coax to the antenna, a short piece of coax to the meter, and plan to get a dummy load.
Whenever there is a question as to whether things are working OK, the first step is to see what happens when transmitting into a known good dummy load.  Its the first step in testing!
Get a meter designed for the band(s) you plan to use... now and in the future.
