Bad Experience with N4DEK
« on: July 02, 2022, 12:46:41 PM »

Purchased a ICOM SM-20 Mic from Donald Knight (N4DEK) here on eham.net in June 2022. The ad stated it was in very nice condition and hardly used. When it was packed up for shipping the metal eight pin mic jack was placed inside the bag with the mic. During transit and being bounced around the mic jack chipped off a good size area of paint on the mic body. You can see the paint chips inside the plastic bag.  Also the ICOM box was placed in a outer box with no packing material/bubble wrap. The ICOM box was sliding around inside the outer box and this contributed to the damage. When emailed him he got nasty in his email and wanted me to send it back to him before he would issue a refund. Wrong...Leaves me no recourse. Besides would he have shipped it to me before I transferred payment to him. (It's the Principal) Avoid making purchases with him. He doesn't take the time to pack items carefully and has a smart mouth. Bad HAM to do business with.

Aren't you being a bit harsh? Asking to receive the item back before issuing a refund is completely normal IMHO. I'm surprised he didn't ask for pictures of the package and the mic.

I would not issue a refund either until I received the item back.

i have never heard of a company giving a refund before getting their product back!

Maybe he had other things on his mind while packing the unit but he is willing to take the product back and give you a refund. You are being overly anal.

See the problem here is that while he wants the item back before a refund is some people may send back a piece of junk instead of the one shipped to you. Plus, due diligence comes into play in that he wants to make sure it was his problem and not something you did to damage the item.

Think about it...you don't go to a store and get your money back without bringing the item with you. Why should the seller here not have the same right?

This is why I always pay with PayPal Goods and Services.

Even if the seller wants Friends and Family.

I'll cover the 2.9 percent.  It is a trivial amount to give me the peace of MI d that I only need to send a message to get my money back.

Sorry you had a bad transaction.

Shipping damage can occasionally occur.  Asking for the item back before issuing a refund is normal.  Situation reversed, wouldn't you do the same?  The seller offered you a refund, no need to bash him.

Post a picture of the mic so we all can see the terrible damage.

Even in this part of the world, it is common to return the purchased product first before getting a refund. Anyway, it is always better to wait a few days before complaining in public about a supposedly bad seller. Better drink a beer together.
