Looking for Equivalent Powerwerx Box - Just the box
« on: July 08, 2022, 06:37:25 AM »

Does anyone know where I might get this box that doesn't include all the Powerwerx add ons?  I like the size, but can't seem to pull it up any where.

Here is a similar box on Amazon. I don't know how close it is to the Powerwerx box.

Search online for "Plano Marine Box"
You might find something you like.

That is one slick PowerWerx box. But it should be for $169!

Harbor Freight utility box.  Bigger than their .50 caliber box.   Cheap and fantastic.

I don't know if I'd trust their water tight integrity.

How about a Pelican box if they make your size?

No mention is made of its water-tightness on the Powerwerx site.   Much depends on the quality and fit of the mounted connectors, switches, etc.

I have two Harbor Freight boxes and they have lid seals in them. Any box you use is going to have penetrations so you have to exercise a certain amount of caution.   I've put a fan and an external speaker on one of mine, and I've had it out in inclement weather, but I'm not sitting out in the rain. I'm usually under a shelter of some kind.

I looked up the retail price of just the parts to build that box and it totals $161 + shipping costs (assume $25) and time to do the ordering (assume your time is not worth anything) for a total of $186.  The cost of the PowerWerx box is $169.99 + $35.23 shipping for a total of $205.22.  So, if you have all the things necessary to machine the box and make good, crimped connections and you assume your assembly time and labor are not worth anything, you would save $19.22.

Just the box is available on Amazon - search for: MTM Ammo Can - Dry Storage Emergency Marine Box - AC35

Last year for Field Day, I built a 12v 50 Amp-hour box using one of those.
It fits a U1 sized LiFePO4 battery perfectly with a little room left over for wiring.
Works very well. Probably not totally waterproof, but does the trick.
Then again, I don't operate from a boat.

I did similar using a larger battery in a box, no magic..

Water tight requires connectors with caps and gasketed seals.
The PowerWorkx box is not water tight.

Usually though rain resistant is easy to achieve as you want
water to run off and not collect inside.  I happen to like that
arrangement so inside a tent or cover as standing in the
rain is no fun.

Since it has to be open in access and cool the stuff inside
use the requirement may be a wish or for transportation only.

FYI water tight means closed non operating.
