Computer Control of the Yaseu FT-897D
« on: July 11, 2022, 07:43:52 AM »

At one time, I was using Windows and was able to control my FT-897D. Unfortunately, due to a lighting strike several years ago the computer was fried. Since then I have moved to Linux (Mint) and no longer have a computer close to where where the FT-897 is located. Since it has been several years, I was wondering if there is anything new.
  • Is there a Linux program that would would work?
  • A new Linux program, bottles, has emerged that allows one to run a Windows program under Linux. Has anyone used it for the FT-897D program?
  • Is there an Android application that would work? That would be the optimal solution since I have an Android tablet. Tablets, as a hand carry device, are easy to relocate to the computer's location.
  • A Windows laptop would work, but I am reluctant to pursue that option.

Thanks for the lead. I had not heard of FLRIG before. Additionally there appears to another program that I had not heard of before: FLDIGI.  Evidently FLRIG and FLDIGI are interconnected. Will need to look into them. Should keep me busy for a while.

Times change. At the time I had the FT-897 connected to the computer, computers came with a serial port. Now, they have USB ports. Additionally, Android tablets only have USB ports. So, my existing FT-897 cable, will no longer connect to a device (computer) unless it has a serial port card. Fortunately, FT-897 cables are available with a USB connector now.

Turns out that a USB to USB-C adapter had to be ordered. I ordered the Radio Programming Cable for Yaesu FT-897 CAT Cable. Tuns out that it has a standard USB connector for connecting to a regular computer. The Android tablet takes a USB-C connector. Didn't think of that at the time. Ordered the Syntech USB C to USB Adapter - C Male to USB3 Female Adapter. So, in theory the connection between the radio and the tablet can be made. Unfortunately, I have yet to find an Android application that works with the FT-897D.

I did find an app for the FT-857. As a long shot, I gave it a try, but it did not work.
