July 12 bands dead?`
« on: July 12, 2022, 02:01:33 PM »

I don't get it. K index is 3 I hear nothing on 20 or 40 meters cw. Checked to make sure my antenna is still connected. Not even enough background noise to move the s meter.

Still having problems?  I hear signals at this time.  www.dxmaps.com shows activity.
www.spaceweather.com shows minor G1 storm ongoing.

Yes the bands are down today. This article explains the propagation report beyond just SN, SFI, A and K. See QRZ for the prop report. To me it looks like the earth is being blasted by a fast and dense solar wind.

Today:
SFI 165  (good)
A 18 (approaching minor geomagnetic storm)
K 3 (approaching minor geomagnetic storm)
X-Ray C1.0 (approaching moderate, not good)
304A 133 (almost good)
Proton flux 1940 (very high, not good)
Electron flux 3430 (heavy impact)
Bz 2.1 (ok)
SW 480 km/s (moderate)
Geomagnetic Field UNSETTLED
Sig Noise Lvl S2-S3

Dx I managed to snag today that I actually needed.

5X3R Uganda on 15 meters FT8
D2UY Angola on 20 meters FT8
3A/F6EXV Monaco on 30 meters FT8
3A/F6EXV Monaco on 30 meters CW

And I worked about 40 POTA stations today
mixed CW/FT8/SSB

Better today than most days.

Go to the 37 minute mark of this video.   Dr. Skov puts an explanation on the numbers that I can buy into.   Most of those "numbers" are area specific.  What's happening in your plot of land might not be happening in another county or state.   After watching her explanation several times I stop paying attention to the bs numbers and play the cards I'm given.

That should be densely ionized solar wind. And, there will be short term (a couple of hours) degradation caused by solar flare X-Rays. See them near real time at SpaceWeatherLive:
