I have been familiar with the FT-101 line of Yaesu equipment since the 70's. You get a lot of mis-information on these old war horses. FYI, The FR-101D receiver does not have a speaker. You need an external speaker. The older SP-101 speaker is the matching speaker for those receivers. I see them on eBay all the time although the prices keep rising. Hope this helps.

I assume you must have a speaker hooked up to hear a "crackle"?
The low hum is probably bad caps in the power supply. At least that would be a starting point...
Check that the PC boards didn't get dislodged during shipping.

Otherwise...not a working radio...time for a conversation with the seller.

Hi all thanks for the reply, yes I connected the radio to a Yaesu speaker and heard the hum also I looked I side and all the boards are in place, getting anyone here in Ireland to do anything with equipment like this is impossible and I'm not an electrical engineer, the seller doesn't do returns

Also I seen a piece on the online user manual that the radio will work on a 12 volt battery which would by pass the power supply and it says you hook it up to the black and red power cord wires, also I see some people on ebay selling sets of capacitors for various Yaesu radios.

Do you have the shorting plug in the mute socket on the rear side?

I have an FR-101 that is deaf also.

It could be a dozen things wrong. Oscillator board, etc, etc.

The FR-101 has a built in signal generator operated by a switch inside the radio to test.

You need to get the manual if you don't have one.

There is a good you tube on it with possibly your problem.

If all this is not what you want to undertake RETURN IT. The "no returns" is BS, and unless it was sold as "parts not working" eBay will refund you all your money PLUS return postage.

Just last week I got a meter that didn't work. I contacted the buyer who said no returns. I contacted eBay and within 3 days I had a return label and in a week a full refund.

With regard to not finding anyone to work on the radio in Ireland............That problem is everywhere today on the older tube and hybrid rigs. Without an O-Scope, and a multitude of other test equipment, it's hard to do the work yourself.

It sounds like the return is the best option for your repair experience. Though you could learn a lot by digging into that 50 year old receiver.

Does the FR-101 operate now? When this plug is missing the radio remains mute.

Hello thanks to all for the Mute plug,I put it in and radio came to life, that's the good news however no signals can be heard just dead band but on 17mhz I can hear the usual band whistles and noise etc but on other bands nothing,I think alot of switches need a bath 9f Servisol switch cleaner and maybe the contacts where the boards connect in also, all help and advice are greatly appreciated as I'm on my own here with these old boat anchors, you'd just about get a doctor or dentist here

The wavebands selector switch is known to cause problems after long-term of non-use. Switching back and forth several times should help to clean the contacts again. Otherwise use a non aggressive cleaning spray that evaporates without leaving any residue. Here in DL we use CRC Tuner 600 - I don't know what you can buy in EI-Land.

Never (!) use the usual contact cleaners for electro-mechanical purposes, they will surely ruin the switch in the long run.

Of course you have to retune the preselector by hand for every single frequency range separately and the switch for the VHF converters has to be set to off. Also the selector switch in the upper left corner is set to "INT", the "RF Gain" to "10" and the "STBY" not pressed in.

Sorry, but I don't have any more ideas about your problem with the RX now.
