AC-1 Junior Glowbug
« on: July 28, 2022, 05:55:18 PM »

I recently picked up a little 1 tube transmitter, called the AC-1 Junior. I have made a qso with it, but other than the original designer's site I cannot find any documentation, assembly manual, schematic, alignment procedures, etc.

I would appreciate any information I can get.
Thanks

Tim

I have one that I built years ago. I did make some contacts with it. IIRC theres a transformer to step up voltage. There's a built in T/R relay (which is really handy) and mine has three cystals, it came with one and I had several others to fill the slots. The only adjustment (and this is from memory) was a single variable cap that helped set output. I get 1 watt output from mine measured by my Oak Hills QRP wattmeter. I'll rummage around over the weekend to see if I kept the construction manual. As one watt rigs go it's pretty good.

Hi Doc,
Mine is the same with the 3 xtals and T/R switch. Mine only puts out 500 mw right now. I haven't taken the top off yet but will look into it tomorrow. I did make a qso with it last night using a little MFJ 40 meter cub for a receiver. I'm in Ohio and the other guy was in Michigan.

By the way I'm also getting a couple Ameco AC-1's back on the air. 6 watt power houses!!
Thanks for the response

I looked around my files and don't seem to have the assembly manual. Sorry I couldn't help you there. Using a Cub for a receiver is a clever idea, it could probably sit on top of the rig. I have a  SW 40 that might work.

FB on the AC-1. Several years ago I ordered a clone from a German ham who was making the chassis and selling the kit. I put it on the air every so often. Even though I have a number of crystals for it only a couple of them don't sound like a bird. Had some good contacts with that. Good luck.

Thanks for looking Doc. I'll eventually track them down. I think the Cub and SW series are very similar in operation. I have 3 AC-1's, one is a clone kit that needs completion. Both of the others are of the original 60's vintage. One works fine and the other needs a 365pf variable. I thought I had one but can't seem to locate it.

Thanks for all the info Doc.

Hi Tim,

I'm glad if I could help you. I got this transmitter kit ten years ago from my wife for Christmas. A very nice RIG. No more available unfortunately.
