"Hybrid" meetings - Zoom plus in person
« on: July 31, 2022, 07:06:41 PM »

Any clubs using "hybrid" meetings - in person and Zoom? If so, has it worked out well for you? We have used it in my club and you have to play with audio and cameras but once you get it set up it works well. de AG5T

It's working well for our club.

Members are now eager to get back to face-to-face and some of the activities we used to have.

But, some members aren't willing or able to do face to face meetings yet.  Our physical attendance is about half of what it was when we were "live only" but the rest of the members do show up on Zoom.

One thing our club was always strong about was programs.  We have always had good speakers.  Going to Zoom during the pandemic actually allowed us to expand our roster of speakers as the speaker can now be remote (something we almost never did before Zoom).

I think we will struggle to get back to a full, pre-COVID state of affairs.  It's not easy when an aging membership is not universally keen on appearing in person.  It probably will happen, but for now, the mixed format is keeping us going nicely.

We switched from full Zoom meetings to hybrid meetings at the 1st of this year. We were full Zoom for 2 years with great participation - 40 to 70 people. The hybrid meetings have on average 20 to 25 zoom members and 40 to 50 in-person members. The meetings are held at the WCEMA ESC using their hybrid meeting equipment. With only a couple of hickups at first, all meetings have gone very well. All meetings are recorded. Check out www.wcares.org.

I agree fully with the prior comments. As I have gotten older, I am very reluctant to drive after dark in my large city, and since attending ham club meetings isn't considered essential travel, I really like the hybrid zoom meetings. I get to stay active in the club while remaining safe at home enjoying the program. I have spoken with several members of our club and they felt the same way. I suppose COVID has had at least one positive outcome.

If you don't have anything nice to say, at least have the courtesy to be vague.

The local club I belong to has held Zoom meetings for a couple of years, as well as at least one hybrid meeting. The Zoom-only meetings have been successful and, as W7OR pointed out, it's a lot easier to find speakers when you can look outside the local area.

One problem we experienced with the hybrid meeting was echo suppression. My impression is that all the audio at the in-person meeting has to run through one computer for it to work. I'd be interested in hearing about other people's experiences with hybrid meetings.

Hi W6BP,

We run an external CAM and an external USB mic. We will ask folks present in the room to sit in the chair near the mic, and it sounds great. They're not alot.

Like many clubs, ours went to exclusive Zoom meetings for a couple of years.  it worked very well.

Earlier this year, we started in-person meetings again, but continuing with Zoom for people that don't want to travel or live outside the area.

As was pointed out earlier, the absolute best thing about the hybrid meetings is it allows for guest speakers from outside the area who would never been able to make a presentation if it had been strictly in-person.  We have had some really great programs over the past coupe of years.
