Using Zoom for club meetings
« on: July 31, 2022, 07:11:34 PM »

Just curious about Zoom - some people ask checkins to turn off their camera to save bandwidth. How many Zoom checkins would it take to mess up the bandwidth if cameras were on. My club doesn't have many zoom checkins. Is Microsoft Teams better? As mentioned I'm just curious.....

I use Skype for three "clubs" here. It is free and I have no issues with up 25 and regularly have guest speakers too. It is FREE!

We did zoom meetings durring the lockdown and didn't have any problems.  Now we only use it for special, late notice meetings.  Zoom is a wonderful tool, but in person meetings are a much better vehicle for enjoying the company of fellow members.

We use both Zoom and in person. The zoom tie in makes it so those who normally cannot attend do, and it makes it simple for presentations from anywhere to be given.

Our club had only virtual meetings but now has one hybrid each month. All hybrid now as school we rent from is closed until Sept.

We use Zoom. These make it work well for hybrid meetings: laptop, cam and external USB mic. The cam and external mic are not a lot of money and make all the difference. Need hotspot access too at site or remote hotspot of course.

They are great if someone is doing a presentation as well.

Turning off a camera will not save bandwidth for the group. It will only effect the single user's ISP bandwidth which is minimal. Everyone in a meeting is connected to the Zoom server, not a bunch of individual users. Zoom's compression algorithm compensates for the bandwidth issue. BTW, be sure to upgrade to Zoom client v.5.11.3 or later by August 6. There is a security issue Zoom has fixed with 5.11.

All that said, we switched to MS Teams (a form of Skype) and are much happier with overall performance and features.
