Question for you POTA guys
« on: August 07, 2022, 05:38:06 PM »

Andalusia, the Georgia home of author Flannery O’Connor in Milledgeville, is now designated as a national historical landmark by the National Park Service. Does this mean it will qualify for the POTA program? Or is it considered a historical landmark and POTA is only for parks that are there for conservation purposes, even though the National Park Service made this designation?

I'm not interested in POTA, but there could be others around here who are, if this is considered a national park. I've never seen this landmark. I drive by it every trip to Walmart and see the sign, but it can't be seen from the highway.

There's a couple more famous authors from the next town north of me. Alice Walker (The Color Purple) and Joel Chandler Harris. (Uncle Remus) Historically speaking, I'm in the deep south.

From the parks on the air FAQ page:

Q: How do I get a park added to the POTA database, or get park coordinates fixed etc…?

A: Over the last year we’ve updated the US database, and even though not every possible POTA entity can be activated, we are in pretty good shape, and will take a two year break before we will add more parks, unless it is a newly developed state/federally owned state or national park.

If you are seeking to add a new country, please write an e-mail to W3AAX via qrz.com.  If you are wishing to add a park to an existing POTA country in the system, please go to our official site https://parksontheair.com, Look up the appropriate country admin mapping representative, and contact them via their e-mail on QRZ.com, and please ask them. They are my voice from each country. We ONLY add state/provincial/prefecture etc. or national/federal level parks due to overhead.   For park corrections in the U.S., please send them to the mapping coordinator on the main site.  I get all corrections from them directly.

A National Park and a National Historical Landmark or not the same entities.

There are homes that are on the register of National Historical Landmarks that are not suited for POTA. They are just presidential homes etc.

Sticking with the "Parks" would be better than trying to set up in backyard of a Landmark.

If you are seeking to add a new country, please write an e-mail to W3AAX via qrz.com.

Went to W3AAX's page, and saw he runs the POTA program. Went to his website at https://parksontheair.com which is well set up, easy to navigate, and very informative. If I have any more questions, I'll ask W3AAX.

A map on the site showed two parks in my county. One is a wildlife management area, and the other is an educational state forest. Also saw that no one from my area ever activated those parks, they came from other areas of the state.

A National Park and a National Historical Landmark or not the same entities.

There are homes that are on the register of National Historical Landmarks that are not suited for POTA. They are just presidential homes etc.

From looking at parks around the country on the map provided by W3AAX. this appears to be correct. What I wasn't sure about was the designation of landmarks coming form the National Park Service. Guess that's part of government bureaucracy. Sorta like weights and measures for scales and gas pumps being regulated by the Department of Agriculture.

Thanks guys for the replies.
