Which digital PMR would you recommend for use in a race car?
« on: August 08, 2022, 03:01:22 PM »

Hi,

I participate in club motor racing - real low end stuff.  I currently race with a team that uses TYT analogue PMR units; one in the car with a small roof-mounted antenna, one used by the race engineer equipped with a rubber duck and a headset.  I've noticed two problems:
  • Our radio often clashes with others and it can be difficult to find a free channel.
  • Reception is bad at some parts of some tracks, e.g. a small track like Brands Hatch Indy is fine, but a larger track like Donington Park is not good.
I'm building my own car for next season and my plan to avoid these problems is to use digital PMR sets for more channels, and put a small antenna on a squid pole up the side of the pit garage wall.  Not sure of the response I'll get from the track staff/marshals.
  • Does this plan seem sound?
  • Which digital PMR would you recommend?  One that can take 12v external power in the car would be good.
  • Have you had experience of using an elevated antenna at a UK race track?  Is there an alternative?
Thanks in advance.

I have a TYT UV380 (dual band analogue/DMR) and the receiver is really rubbish. It checks out OK on a signal generator, but in practice the received audio on analogue FM often sounds distorted. In “side by side” comparison on analogue FM with an Icom ID-51 (dual band analogue/D-Star) over a half mile path across an edge of town non industrial area, the TYT was just noisy and only fit for the scrap bin.

I would look at proper radios, not Chinese junk.
