Kenwood TS-870 Noise Issue
«
on:

My 870 works very well with one exception. Seems like I have more band noise than usual. Conpared to my TS-850 the noise is excessive and cannot be tuned out. Anyone have a comparable issue and can offer a suggestion as to a cure?
Thanks for any help

Is this a new to you TS870 or one that you have had a while? I am asking that is the TS870 noisier than it usually is, or you have just received it and noticed that it is noisier than a TS850?

When you disconnect the antenna does the noise level go down?
Are the preamps all turned off?
Do signals have the same carrier to noise ratio on each radio?
Is the RF gain control set properly on each radio?
Is the band pass tuning set at the same levels of bandwidth?
Are you using the same speaker for both radios?

Does it still happen even with the NR "on"?

I took the 870 in trade towards a FT-950 about 4 mos. ago and have used it regularly since then. Have always thought it was noisy but kept trying to tune the noise out. Compared to the 850 the 850 is noticeably quieter and receive audio is much clearer.
Disconnecting the antenna does of course reduce the noise level but static is still present at a much lower audio level.
All preamps are off
Signal to carrier to noise ratio is pretty close
RF gain controls are set full clock wise on both radios
As best can be set band pass tuning is the same
Both radios are connected to a SP-31 and switched between for comparisons.
Turning NR on or off has no effect on the higher static level of the 870.

Had some good fortune - thought to check all connections, changed out the antenna switch and coax connecting cables. Then tried again using NR. Problem gone. Thanks for suggestions.
