Programming Vertex VXD-720 (Cable Issues)
« on: August 12, 2022, 06:50:59 AM »

I had so much luck with another recent issue, I figure I'll try this as well...

I recently picked up a Vertex  VXD-720, then bought a programming cable for it from EBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/265542644669).  The cable registers as a Prolific Cable in Windows 10 [64-bit] Device Manager. No matter what I do, I cannolt get the radio to be recognized by the Vertex CPS software... I've tried all 3 different USA versions and still no go. Seems it is the cable, but the seller says it is compatable with the radio (and has positive feedback on this item to demonstrate that). The ".inf" file in "Program Files/Common Files/Vertex Standard/Drivers" is not recognized by Windows as a valid driver. Do I need a 32-bit machine maybe? This has me stumped (and I am not a tech-newbie by any means). I've programmed dozens of Vertex radios with EBay cables, and have prorammed a few non-Vertex DMR radios, and have always been successful. This is a new one to me. Any thoughts on how I can use the cable or where I can get another correct cable? Although I got the radio itself for free, I had to buy a new battery for it, and it is useless right now due to the cable issue. Any help would be appreciated.

You should try to stay away form Prolific cables. There is always driver issues because this chip has many knockoffs.
FTDI serial cables works better.

I generally do but this is the only one that was available online that I could find "in stock", but my understanding is that the "correct" cable for the VXD-720 does not have any chip in it, it is a "pass through" cable and the radio itself has the converter needed.  This seems to be my issue.  Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!
