All good things come to an end… His site was a refuge for older and sometimes rare homebrew parts. Maybe someone else will pick up the inventory. Thanks to Dan for his service over the years.

With small businesses like this, along with hamfests, in decline, homebrewing of gear will take a big hit.  You can get some items from Amazon, eBAY or AliBaba but, the more esoteric items will become unobtanium.  Sad  :(

This is a sad day!  I have ordered alot of stuff over the years from Dan.
I was on his site last week and had a "list" of things I wanted.
But the fact is, I would have ordered ALOT-ALOT more from him
if I could have ordered online!!
I haven't had checks in years(I'm sure I do but don't know where?)
so had to goto the post office, money order, etc
And that was a pain!  I had to REALLY want/need the part to buy from him.
Still, It sucks.

4WO, online out in Montana is not like a major city... plus, set up and monitor/protect online cart software, card processing, etc... it's a lot easier for a small guy working out of a barn or garage to work off paper. so that's how he did it. probably a sideline to whatever his real work was.

not impossible he might do some blowout stuff on eBay, his handle was, I believe, krisskringle. haven't seen that active for a while, though.

I'm sorry to see him shut down operations. Dan's was a good place to buy hard-to-find components. I'm a big fan of small vendors.

With me its usually many hamfests are far away from where i live, so my only recourse is online sales.
I miss outon many possible good deals.
Many hamfest items if not sold end up scrapped for parts or in a landfill.
While im not under any driving restriction,
Many distant drives are out of the question.

PayPal.  It's deposited directly into your checking account.

When guys in Zimbabwe can get their dollars from selling (scamming), it's a no brainer than someone in Montana can get theirs, too.

I am wondering if it's the other way around.....  that is, with the significant drop in interest in homebrewing these days, the demand for parts is just not enough to keep a parts business going.  Local electronics parts shops have all but disappeared in most cities.

On a related note, look at the recent ARRL handbooks and QST ...  not nearly as much project info as in earlier years.

The website was rather difficult to navigate too. He should have had a search option to find things quickly.
Home-brewing is more about software and modules than discrete components these days , so that did n't help him either.

I'm thinking that we oldies, (that enjoyed home-brewing so much), are fixing to meet our makers and have slowly been dropping off the rolls of "homebrewers", thus giving way to the "new" or "used" folks. As is the case in most hobbies when a new item seems to look and function so much better than what we've been accustomed to.
..sigh .. LOL

Theres a certain satisfaction in homebrewing that you cant get from just buying gear either new or used.
Repairing can be somewhat, and even kit building a little.
Homebrewing can often be frustrating, but it is fun.
Experimenting and seeing or hearing the results( or smelling when you poof a transistor or led) :o is all part of the fun!
But making a contact with a handfull of parts soldered together ugly or dead bug style has a certain sense of accomplishment that cannot be gotten any way else.
I will miss dans he had some good deals.

part of the reason for the decline of homebrewing is due to the evolution of electronics.
The parts are now very small and difficult for a non professional to solder and assemble.
In fact, it's not easy for me either.

I just replaced SMD pin diodes that were smaller than the head of a pin. It also requires an expensive  hot air solder system to accomplish!

Now they buy Arduino modules and solder those together instead!

I don't have a hot air solder system, but I have managed to replace several SMD components including 100 pin chips with a simple kit of Chipquick and my chisel tip iron. The key is to use lots of liquid rosin in the kit. Lots and lots. Clean up with 91 percent isopropanol. Chipquick is a slow freeze metal "solder" that amalgamates with the solder to allow a longer working time to use your parts tweezers to pluck up the component. Clean up almalgamated solder blob with either braid wick or solder sucker, lay down the new component then tack 1 or two legs and "draw solder" the rest of the legs with using lots and lots of liquid rosin. Inspect for any solder bridges and repair with more rosin and the drawing technique of soldering. Watch some you-tube videos to learn how.
