Please ! Answer me on FT8....
« on: August 25, 2022, 01:14:51 PM »

Hi,

When I am operating as DX from one of the Caribbean Islands, I go to FT8 to get away and relax from the SSB pileups. However, I OFTEN get Emails saying that "THEY" have been calling me for a long time and I never answer....why, my Email reply is:

Hi,
I sit here and watch TV, and let the WSJT-X select who I work. When the "LOG" it screen pops up I press "OK", then I press "Enable Tx", whomever the program selects it answers.   I occasionally look at the screen to see if any of the FULL SCREEN of stations calling are familiar calls or friends, and then I will manually select them.  I am sorry if WSJT-X did not select you in the PILEUP.....

As I am also E51DLD, I know the feeling. Too many don't realize we are there on our dime and for R&R.

Well John, thanks for the tip.  Now we know that you are calling CQ with the Call 1st checkbox checked. Therefore we know that the program answers the first call it decodes. THEREFORE we know that if we can be the lowest frequency that your bandwidth is set to decode, and we hope that is 200hz. we should have a pretty good shot at getting you.  Again Thanks!.
P.S.   If your receive bandwidth is screwed down tight and is centered on 1500hz, pse let us know how wide it is and the lowest audio frequency you can reliably decode.  Again thanks.

It's a hoot. I think it's a complete grin.
Of course- I've actively sat and called a station in S. Argentina for an hour to work him using 10 milliwatts on 15m CW. And worked him using 2.5 mw ;D
Oh oh.. here comes the CW op hate!

Hi,
Sorry, that if after working a couple hundred stations during a two or three hour pileup on SSB, if I just want to relax and do some casual operating on FT8, WITHOUT having to stare at my laptop for another couple hours....

There is nothing to be sorry about.  :)
I only answer stations that don't use LOTW if their signal is in the -20s.

Interesting on the freq thing, I did not realize that is how the software works.  Also, I run my clock a split second faster than UTC in hopes of an early decode.  I wonder if this is futile based on the little trick you just mentioned.

It doesn't work that way anymore.  Since the decode now makes two passes, the lowest frequency is not always the one that is selected.

I think this can potentially do more harm than good to your success rate.

What I do - and I really dislike bringing JTDX up so many times - is to select "early start of decoder". Look for something similar in the software you use.

Yes - its worked that way for some time.   Just as with CW, TX power now makes a significant difference with high SNR stations usually preferred.

Here Here.  It's OK to hop on ssb and all of a sudden have a pileup.  People who don't operate as a dx entity don't understand how after an hour or two of constantly talking, it gets a little tedious, the throat could use a rest, etc.

That, and a lot of people don't understand "island time".

Though I'm not here for R&R and am full time island, sometimes I do look fondly back at AM operating, where the conversation is what counts.  Not "You're 5/9 175 73"
