Physical size of VHF/UHF Radio
« on: August 28, 2022, 11:26:04 AM »

I think this is where I shoud be, I am scouring the web for a used VHF/UHF radio do not know if I should get a combination radio or seperate radios what are you thoughts?
On another note these radios come in small, medium and large, I want a radio for a base aas I aquired a new QYT 8900 VHF/UHF mobile radio for my truck. I am leaning towards the medium size but just have enough questions and doubt to keep me from pulling the trigger.
What if any experiance have you had with buying from Japan?

It depends on the application.  I liked having separate radios when I started out (and kinda still do) because it was nice to be able to talk to local friends to help me troubleshoot new station or HF setup problems.

On the other hand, once you've been around the hobby for a while, you might find places where you want one radio to bring and setup quickly like a go box or in a second location like a camper, a cabin, or a second location in your home.

I would go for a dual band radio WITH crossband repeat.  Look at the Kenwood TM-V71A.

Thank you for the reply, the kenwood is a nice radio but at this time in my life the radio is way out of my price range I am trying to stay under $300.00 also I want to keep it simple and keep the wife happy.

This QYT 8900 radio I have came with a purchase and it was new back in 2021, I like the idea how small it is almost stuff it in a shirt pocket, it claims to have 25W are there any reviews on this?
I would like to get a decent VHF/UHF as a base and I am willing to take the risk on a used radio, how do I find out how old a radio is and if parts are availabe?
