Shelby, NC Hamfest
« on: September 04, 2022, 06:51:18 AM »

I've been attending this one for about 50 years now off and on.  This really ought to be a one day hamfest instead of spread out over 4 or more days.  As a buyer, I'm there for one day, Saturday, and that used to have the biggest crowds and you'd have the best chance of finding nice used gear in the flea market.  This year, maybe one if five vehicles in the flea market area had anything for sale and many sellers come only on Thursday or Friday.  The hamfest hosts have a nice free benefit for attendees - a courtesy shuttle (golf cart).  I bought a heavy amplifier and wondered how I was going to get my van into the flea market to pick it up.  The shuttle hauled me and the amp to my van and the driver even lifted the amp in and out of the cart for me.  Attendance was obviously way down from previous years.  All in all, still a good hamfest but be prepared for very hot and sticky weather.

Yeah, its the ebay effect and just a shift in interest. I love Shelby, did not get there this year. The last time i went was when it was held in Dallas for the final time.  You could have easily opened the doors and shut down about 4 pm. Really sad, campers use to flood the area thurday and friday and that was when the best deals were to be found.

So tell us about you amp purchase...

A very nice Icom PW-1 amp, from an estate sale.  There were a few amps for sale that I've never seen at a hamfest - two Johnson Thunderbolts - and   Johnson 500 transmitter.  Not liftable for anyone over the age of 50.
