Lots of obsessing about receiver performance going on, not much talk about transmit performance.  If folks were to obsess about that like they do about receive, then everyone would be running one of the ANANs with their PureSignal adaptive predistortion enabled.

BUT the most important aspect is also being ignored: do you like to operate the rig?  Go to a store, or find hams who have the rigs you're considering, and try them out.  Do you like the panel layout?  How about the bandscope design, if any? (I'm sure the new Yaesu rigs are excellent but that 3-D waterfall would drive me nuts ;))  How easy is it to navigate the menus?  Having the world's best dynamic range is little comfort if you curse about the stupid menu design every time you have to adjust a filter.

Hope everyone finds a rig they like.

Today's radios would all sound fine *if* folks would take the time to properly adjust all the various controls for optimum response...gain, compression, EQ, and ALC. Not by listening to the radio's monitor, but listening to the actual signal in a separate receiver.

Another problem is using an incompatible mic for the radio. For instance using a dynamic mic with a radio designed for an electret condenser one.

There may not be any "one" radio for a lot of us. I liked my Heathkit 20Meter monobander: simplicity, tube audio, 200 watts, great for extended chatting on the best band. I'll get an ANAN eventually just to see what it's like to use diversity and SDR to work the really weak ones.. I liked my President or whatever it was called: chatted on 10M FM when the band was super-open.. it's all fun...
