Jim,
You didn't mention it, but presume you will only be operating FM?  I would recommend the Kenwood TM-V71A dual band rig. I have two; one in the shack and another in my go kit.

If you plan to operate VHF/UHF SSB, I would turn my attention to the Yaesu FT-991A or Icom IC-7100, i.e. 'shack in a box'.

QRZ shows you ~40 miles from Minneapolis, so I would think a modest antenna would allow you to hit some number of repeaters in that general vicinity.  With a gain antenna and some height you might hit more.  Beyond that, you could try weak signal modes, satellite and I would suggest getting set up for 6M.  Are you limited to V/U for some reason?  HF offers a lot of operating opportunity.

Currently I am stuck with v/u until I can scratch enough bread together to buy a hf rig, the closest repeater is the n9xh in Balsam Lake, WI but theYaesu ft4x will not trip the repeater. I am going to build a gain antennaonce the weather cools off and I will get the ICDR 610 plugged in.

Do not know how to edit this post to add to it .
Do I put the repeater freq in the radio of where I expect to travel?  I would also like to take the radio with when I ride with my son he is a OTR owner/operator.
am going to try the sat thing .
Thanks for your help
