Icom IC-7410 USB problem
« on: September 14, 2022, 09:56:41 AM »

Hello everyone,

I have been having some issues with an IC-7410 I picked up recently.

Initially, the USB connection worked alright except that no modulation seemed to go through to the radio from WSJT-X. The audio CODEC worked fine on the receive end. On WSPR, it heard tons of stations but no one heard me. I was troubleshooting that by playing with the CAT/RTS modes and reinstalling drivers but that did not help much at all other than seeing that CAT was the only mode that really worked. This situation played out the same on both Mac and Windows.

A day or two later, the main computer (Windows 7) recognized the radio only as an unidentified USB device and would not talk to it. When I used a Mac computer to check it, it did not show up there at all. I did a full reset on the radio without improvement.

In terms of general tx/rx, the receive on the radio works fine and it is showing that it transmits without the limiter coming on. I don’t have an external watt/SWR meter to check tx functionality though.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions or has had a similar issue before. Greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Do you have any test eqpt available?
Have you tried a complete reset of the radio?

I just quit the FT8 thing a few months ago, but one of the best features I like about the IC-7410 is the ability to see "Power Out", "ALC" and "SWR" simultaneously on the screen.

Assuming good software installed, and almost factory defaults (except your personal information) in your software, from IC-7410 factory defaults, the only thing I changed was "40. DATA OFF MOD" to "USB".  After that, I would continuously monitor "39. USB MOD Level" and adjust it (while transmitting) for:

Power Out:  as much as I wanted
ALC:  If I was trying to get max power, adjust for a little bit of ALC and then back off until it zeroed out.  This was full power out.
SWR:  1.1 if auto tuner is engaged.

Mike, not at the moment. I ordered an external SWR/wattmeter to make sure.

WW5F, thanks for the info. When I use SSB/AM, the ALC and PWR meter respond as expected with speech. The SWR is generally pegged at 1.1 unless I use the actual SWR menu item on the bottom menu (with the play and stop buttons). When I use a digital mode, all of those meters stay at zero essentially so I think the sound card is not taking modulation from the PC. The computer takes sound output from the radio’s USB with no problems. I need to test out an additional computer to see if I can figure out why the radio is just not being recognized by the computer.

Is there use in trying to use the 13-pin DIN to see if that works or does that require additional hardware?

You mentioned in your first post you tried a factory reset on the radio.  Have you tried changing 40 and adjusting 39 for power out yet?

Edit:  No need to mess with trying to make a cable for the DIN connection.  USB works.

Thank you all for your help. Good news is that with your advice, I got it working. Also, turns out this radio pretty much needs a desktop PC to power the port because laptops just don't provide enough power through the USB port in my testing.
