Yaesu FT-101
« on: September 17, 2022, 02:56:55 PM »

I have an allegedly NOS Yaesu FT-101 pre-25,000-serial number that has apparently never been used. I wired my own power cable, since none came with it. I checked it carefully and put a 3 wire cord on it. I know about the reverse PIN numbers on the cinch Jones connector.

When I plugged it in, about a minute or two in, the 1000uF cap exploded. I shut it off immediately.

I’ve ordered a pre made power cord from eBay and a cheap variac in order to try and bring the rig up slowly. I also am going to replace the cap.

My question is: do you think I damaged anything, or was that just a 50 yo cap that was dried out ?

I’m not sure if it was my power cord causing it. I checked that thing against the schematic many times. The rig did power up ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

Some of those knock-off plugs are mis-numbered, too. You have to be extremely careful and check that the wiring makes sense beyond the numbers alone.
Did the rig light up when you flipped the switch ? I f so, chances are you wired it correctly. If no light and the cap exploded, probably not...

Yes the caps do dry out. It would be a good idea to replace all the caps on the power board.

A radio that has not been in operation for many years must be "started up" slowly and in advance, ideally with a variac, so that the eletrolytics can reform. This was obviously not the case with your FT-101. Which 1000 uF capacitor is it please (circuit diagram number)? This is important to know in order to estimate further steps or impacts. Did you mix up the AC and DC connections in the plug?

However, a detailed online diagnosis is not always possible.

Good luck with your FT-101 - it's a nice and classic rig!

Normally caps explode immediately when the polarization is wrong. Not after a couple of minutes. I've had a few "firecrackers" in my day!
