Grundig Satellite 700 very low volume
« on: October 05, 2022, 02:23:45 PM »

Hi All,

4 years ago I had to replace the FM IF transformer, an apparently well known problem. The radio has functioned perfectly for 2+ years.
I had not used it for since but it stayed plugged into power. I turned it on yesterday to discover that the volume is very low at maximu setting.

Any ideas?

Thank you,

Alex

check the earphone jack by inserting the headphones or earphones , besides being a jack, its a switch that turns off the speaker.

Oh yeah, welcome to forum, I'd also be checking the volume control pot, its the most used control on the radio.

I inserted a headphone in the jack, took it out and then, after a few crackles, the speaker came on as expected.
Thank you, KC6RWI!

I never used headphones with this radio. Could you please explain what do you think has happened?

I really don't have a answer for that. It got dirty somehow, but its one of the first things to check when sound goes away,, good luck with the radio.

It has been my experience that electronic gear that has been idle for a few years has a tendency to develop problems like this.

Whenever you find problems with volume or intermittences of any kind, a contact/control cleaning will usually take care of it.  Many forget to clean things like headphone jacks.

Whenever two pieces of metal are making a pressure contact plus humidity, a microscopic layer of corrosion can form.
