Uniden CR-2021/Realistic DX 400 repair
« on: October 09, 2022, 03:09:47 PM »

Hello everyone,
Would a Uniden CR-2021/Realistic DX 400 shortwave radio be worth buying at $30?  The problem is there is no sound output, even though the radio powers on.  My first guess would be either bad electrolytic caps, blown JFET, or bad audio IC, but this is just a guess.
Has anyone in the forum ever recapped or worked on a Uniden CR-2021/Realistic DX 400?  What I should I look at replacing, and how difficult are they to recap?  Thanks!

Could be an open headphone Jack. May just need some cleaning at the jack contacts.

Probably a bad transistor in the audio stage. I have a DX-400 and I found a burnt transistor, causing a no output condition.

One of these days I'll fix it. I'm too swamped fixing everyone else's radio.

Instead of buying broken radios, why not offer to do minor repair work at a local radio club?
You can start off with simple tasks and tackle tougher projects as you gain experience.

Many experienced repairmen have retired, leaving a big need.

I'm all for it for it, but I'm not an electrical engineer.  I know just enough about restoring old radios to be dangerous.  I can do the basics like check Voltages, replace bad electrolytic capacitors, etc.

I wasn't even a teenager yet when I did my first repair work.
Engineering skills aren't required for nearly all repair work.
The basics are more than enough to be useful.

Correct!  Some Engineering skills are needed when designing equipment primarily because of the knowledge of how components interact determins the values needed to produce the expected results.

Repairing equipment requires methodic troubleshooting skills to determine the faulty component.
Identifying proper component or suitable alternate.
And proper soldering skills.

And a few good Elmer's or Elsa's around is always a benefit.
