Eton Satellite 750: No Volume
« on: October 10, 2022, 08:40:37 AM »

Hi,
I've had the Eton 750 for a few years and bought it new.  But it developed a problem recently.
Everything seems to work normally, but I can turn the Volume knob as I want, I get no sound at all, whatever the frequency.  Any idea about the source of the problem?  Thank you
Cheers

You could try the headphone jack, plug some phones in and remove it acouple of times ,the jack maybe dirty, it can stop the path of the audio to the speaker.

We are on the mods and repairs forum, if you can get there and look down 4 or 5 posts to the  Grundig satelite post, another radio like yours had the same problem.

I understand, thanks a lot.

EDIT:  I've just tried to insert a headphone jack a couple of times, but no luck, still no sound.

It can be difficult to find something if you can't feel or see anything.

If a visual inspection doesn't find anything, it may be necessary to use electrical test equipment to see if a signal is present or not.

I would tune the radio to a broadcast station and look for a signal on the volume control.

The volume control gets flaky after a few years.  I've owned a 750 for a decade, and it started happening about a year ago.  The headphone jack doesn't seem to be a factor on mine.  It's a well-known problem.  Haven't attempted to clean/replace the volume control since I no longer use it regularly.  Maybe someday when I have some time.

What surprises me is that whatever the band/frequency there's no sound at all, even not crackling or white noise.  It's gone completely silent from one day to the next.

Another receiver might be on order for Xmas :-) Don't know what to buy now around $100.

Have you tried to hear from the RCA output connectors using an external audio amplifier? In any case it seems an audio issue that is fairly easily fixable. Ask help to hams in your local radio club if you are not confortare in fixing it.

For around 100 the Tecsun pl660 or pl680 are excellent receivers with well functioning AM synchronous detector and excellent SSB. For being portables they are rather robust to overload and have plenty sensitivity with an external antenna.
