Has anyone worked Bermuda on 2 meter sideband?
« on: June 07, 2022, 07:26:22 AM »

I am wondering if anyone has worked Bermuda on 2 Sideband seems like it should be pretty easy with tropo but I have yet to year anyone from Bermuda on 2 sideband. Come to think of it, don't hear much on HF either.

You could listen for the repeater to see if you have propagation.
https://www.radiobda.com/ mentions HF and repeater net times and frequencies.
I hear VP9 HF stations here in Atlanta.

I have worked it on the satellites so someone there is using 2 meters.

Looking at the map, it appears they are a little too far east for an easy contact.
It would be a lot easier if they were on line between New England and the Caribbean.
It is hard to make contacts on 2M SSB if everyone is pointed away from  you.

Probably not an easy feat, although I've worked above Toronto from the DC area on 2M SSB with 80 watts into 11-elements (about 400 miles). Outer Banks, NC to Bermuda is about 600 miles; with the combo of power and a great antenna, it might be doable, plus the path is over water.  Other parts of the country, not so much.

Well I know I can work into Miami with little trouble and only slight tropo from NC so was thinking it might be possible with a sched. Maybe need to wait for Es and go that route. I have worked them on 6 a couple times. VHF Contest weekend coming so maybe I will get lucky.
Might also listen for their repeater. Nothing gets people more excited when you pound into their 2 Meter repeater via Eskip :-)

I am sure they have... but maybe not recently.  How much room do you have for a beam antenna?

Fun fact: slightly off topic, but...the evening of September 15, 1976, First 2M contact from VP9 to US  on CW via tropo, W1NU/VP9 worked K1HTV in Connecticut.  30 other stations from Maine to Pennsylvania worked also worked the VP9.  Sounds like a phone contact would be a real possibility!

I worked one the Caribbean islands 10 or 12 years ago from New Mexico. I was also getting into the gulf states pretty good. I was running SSB with cubex 8 or 10 element quad at 40 ft with a 160w Mirage brick. Sorry I don’t remember if it was the Bahamas or which island that was a long time ago. I’m sure it during a tropho event in the fall and 2M SSB was on fire.
