Chinese radios on FM satellites
« on: October 27, 2022, 01:54:44 PM »

I am considering picking up a cheap FM dualband radio to have as another travel radio for the satellites.  I am wondering which models of the Chinese dualbanders that people have had success with on the FM satellites.  Some ones at good prices are

TYT TH-7800
TYT TH-8600
Jetstream JT270MH and its Lexein VV-898
Anytone AT778UV

Any good or bad comments on these models?  Other good models to consider?  I do need something with a headphones/speaker jack with leaves out some of the QYT models.

I have made plenty of contacts through SO-50 using a handheld Yagi and my Baofeng UV-5R.  I have my UV-5R attached to a 1/4 wave 2 meter ground plane in the attic of my apartment.  I have worked stations through both SO-50 and the ISS repeater with this setup.  Just my two cents, but I would think any of the other Chinese radios would work just fine.

I checked WD9EWK's list of full duplex rigs... only one I saw listed is the TYT TH-7800. But that may mean he just hasn't checked or added the others. He likes to try out a lot of different rigs, so you might check with him.

BTW John, if you see me on 10/12m FT8 give me a call. I am down to four contacts to finish off 9BWAS-FT8 and OK on those two bands are two of them. (MO on 10m and HI on 160m are the other two.)

Back to the rigs, I picked up a Kenwood V-71 like new from a friend at a really great price... if I can just get off my duff and get it hooked up.  :P

Good luck with the roving... 73, Kevin

I have made contacts using two handhelds and the hood of the car as a reflector.  A dual band iCOM on 2M for the uplink and a 70 CM Alinco for the downlink.  Using headphones on the Alinco, I could hear my signal on the downlink.  Of course, logging was a bit sketchy with both hands full of radios.
