Can't get GPS to work on Kenwood TM-D710G
« on: November 04, 2022, 08:28:40 AM »

I know y'all have read or heard about this, but I'm at the end of knowing what to do. My iGPS on my TM-D710G does not blink. It will not give my location either. My settings for the radio are correct because I'm receiving packets but I can't transmit any. I have read that several other people have had this issue also. The solutions I have read don't work. Anyone have a solution?

Do you have a G or a GA?

If it is a G, which external GPS are you using?

Independant of the hardware you're trying to use, when ever trying to interface a GPS, these are the things I would look at.

Serial Data Format:  NMEA, TEXT, RTCM?  (most of the time NMEA, some of the time, TEXT, I've never seen RTCM used in an application like this.)

Baud:  4800 (is pretty standard)

The electrical spec is most often RS-232 (+3 to +15, -3 to -15), but sometimes it can be TTL (0, +5). (Edit:  is it a USB connection?)

And the map datum used:  There are several.  I think the most common for an application like this is "WGS 84".

I'd get out the manual for the radio and the manual for the GPS and make these settings match in both.

And if there are other common settings in the radio and the GPS, make them match also.

I have a GA. I need to mention that the GPS was working on this radio on 11/1, according to my packet info on APRS. For some reason, this has stopped working and I have no clue why. I'm thinking about doing a soft reset on the radio.

Ok.  New information.  Now, the logical thing to assume is that something must have changed.

So, now to implement the standard troubleshooting/fix actions for most electronics today.

1.  Soft reset.  (didn't work?, proceed to step 2)
2.  Hard reset.  (didn't work?  proceed to step 3)
3.  Update firmware.  (didn't work? It's a hardware failure--replace the radio or the GPS... or maybe both in a small number of cases.)
