Replacing coax connector on Hustler MBM Antenna Mount
« on: November 04, 2022, 11:45:42 PM »

This is a new one on a me.  I need to replace the pl-259 connector on my Hustler MBM mag-mount base.  I took the the base to the local CB shop, because I don't currently have a crimper or connector, and I thought they could put another connector on it for me.  The tech at the shop told me that he never replaces connectors on mobile antenna bases, because the SWR is never right again when you replace the connector or coax.  He told me that essentially, you just have to purchase a whole new base, as the SWR (I guess he means for the cable length) is set at the factory. This seems strange to me, and I have never heard of this.  It would seem as long as your SWR looks good when you replace the connector or just put a similar length of coax on the base, that you should be good to go.  I called Hustler, and they said the same.  Any thoughts on this one?  Thanks!

I would give that tech the "Golden Screwdriver" award!  Did he try to sell you a "leenyer" also?

That’s nonsense. The connector has absolutely nothing to do with resonance or tuning. Replace to connector yourself. If you don’t know how, learn. And use good quality connectors. And last but not least, never go into a “CB shop”.

That CB shop tech certainly does not deserve the GOOD BUDDY award of the year this year. That's big 10-4 doncha spose.

There is more profit selling an entire base and they don't have to warrent it.  They simply did not want to replace a connector.

Back in the day "co-phase" antennas did use a specific length of feedline and if you changed the length of that it might cause a change in SWR.  But even then, an inch or two lost to put on a new connector would have a negligible effect vs a quarter or half wave line at 11MHz.

can't you replace the connector yourself without resorting to having a CB shop do it for you?

Sad commentary given this concept seems foreign to an Advanced class/Extra class licensee. I can somewhat understand a newbie Tech going into a CB store for advice and servicing their “appliances” but a long-time licensee??

This gets scarier when you consider these people vote.

I didn't start this thread because I wanted to listen to smart-ass comments from those of you that seem to know-it-all.  Yes, I am quite capable of replacing a damn coax connector on a piece of cable, done it a time or two.  I simply don't currently have a crimper in my tool box for RG58-U coax to do the job correctly, and I happened to be in the neighborhood of the local CB shop.  My stupid mistake, and I'm an idiot, I know.  I also didn't intend for my thread to start a political discussion about the fact that I vote or that I produce children either.  Some of you guys need to get a life and stop trolling everybody that posts something asking a simple question.  I also have a 4-year college degree, so yeah, stupid f--king me for asking a CB tech to replace a coax connector because I thought they might have the proper crimp tool to put one on in all of about 2 minutes!  73, and have a blessed day!

Read my original post.  I said in my original post that I DON'T HAVE A CRIMPER.
