My question is:  Grammar!

Anyway, if you want operability with the rest of the world, Windows 10 is the answer.  It's a free download, then pay for it if you want.  Or run it unregistered.

Li ux is a great os as well.  There just //isnt// as much ready to run, 'just works' software packages.

I run Linux at home and windows.

My ham radio pc is windows.  This way I don't have to mess with Pulse Audio, etc. to get something working.

Having used windows since windows 3.1 and li ux since the late 90s I can say they each have their place.

But if I have to recommend an operating system to someone who questions which one they need the answer is almost always windows.

I've used both and as Shane said, each has its place. For ham radio - and other electronic applications such as as PC based test equipment - I prefer Windows. There are applications available for Linux for such things but they generally lag behind their Windows counterparts in terms of features, stability, support, ease of installation, and fit & finish. And since Windows is mainstream, there are many, many more software applications to choose from.

My other issue with Linux is the endless array of available distros and the resulting mess from that i.e. some programs only run on certain distros etc. and some distros will not run on some hardware. Way too many fingers in that pie IMO.

I ran Ubuntu for quite a while.  The last release was pretty bad.

Moved back to Linux Mint using the light version of XFCE.  It works well.

I haven't used M$ since about 1998.  All my boxes are Linux and now have a lovely little Raspberry Pi too.  Lots of apps.  Mint gives you a great software installer called Synaptic.  Just click into the Amateur or Ham radio section and go nuts :)

Correct! Ive been a linux user since win nt.
Although i did use winhosed at work, including the catastrophy called win10.
Using linux you will learn the ins and outs of software and will learn a lot more about your computer hardware than you ever will with all the versions of windows together.

Much of my linux use is computer forensics.   I write some code but i do not game at all.

But i will say its often difficult for people to switch away from something they are comfortable using.
I will not get into the all too prevalent windows vs linux debates that often flood many forums because its too easy for some to get offended by criticism of their choice.

I am 76 years old.  I have used Windows from 3.1 until 10.  I really liked Windows 7.  It just seemed to work well without problems.  I did not like Windows 10 but tolerated it until M$ started insisting I had to upgrade to 11.  That was when I decided it was time to take another look at Linux which I had played around with some about 12 or so years ago.  I found out that Linux has come a long way in that amount of time.  A little over a year ago  I started trying some versions of Linux.  I found Zorin to be a very friendly version for someone coming from Windows.  But it did not like my RC flight simulator or some games.  I then found Linux Mint which someone else has already mentioned.  I like the Cinnamon desktop environment because I can modify it to look and work very similar to Windows 7.  LM also works fine with my RC flight simulator and using Synaptic as mentioned gets you many many ham related programs.  I so far have not had any real issues getting those programs to work using Linux Mint.  I now have 2 desktops and 2 laptops with Linux Mint. I only have one desktop that is dual boot that has Windows 7 on it.  I have no other Windows programs on anything else.  I haven't actually used any version of Windows in over a year now.

I do recommend that you try some version of Linux. I was a Unix admin for over 25 years in a very large company. But I pretty much burned out on that stuff. I got tired of 36 hours days. However, if your only dealing with 1 or 2 machines, it should be a fun learning experience. Personally, I like programming in GAWK.

Do not worry about W10. Just because some people don't like it, doesn't make it bad. I updated my W7 systems to W10 several years ago, when they first offered the upgrade. I ran W10 up until last December, when I updated to W11 (22H2). I have two other PCs that are running W10 (22H2). Both are not capable of a W11 update, but they still get W10 updates. I always keep my machines as up-to-date as possible. I usually get Definition updates every single day. The other day I got three in a row.

The problem with Win10 is they never updated the graphics driver for my W520 laptop. I suppose I could upgrade from Win7 and just use integrated graphics but I’m not sure how that will work.

The current equivalents to the old UNIX systems (Slackware Linux and the BSDs) are not suitable for consumer use.  I tried FreeBSD years ago (didn't like it), and ran Slackware for over 20 years, but the new 15.0 has been a disaster, mostly regarding hardware issues and kernel updates that are not completed without manual setup of an initial RAM disk (initrd).  Because of this, I can no longer recommend Slackware.  Fedora (which has a short shelf life but works otherwise) or Mint are probably the best for non-IT people.

I bought my HP Envy laptop in 2017.  It had Win10 installed, and I upgraded it to Pro ($100!) the next day.  It worked fine for 3 months before an update bricked the thing.  It's been running Mint ever since and I have no regrets.  Windows is dead to me.

Linux is a better operating system than Windows in almost all respects - but we don't use operating systems, we use applications. You need to decide what applications you need and then choose the operating system that best supports them. And, where ham radio is concerned, that operating system is usually Windows. Yes, you can find Linux applications to fill most of the functional requirements of a shack PC, but in almost all cases they will be inferior to the Windows equivalents. It's a shame, but the software authors developing ham applications are far more likely to target Windows than Linux.

I'm certainly not a Linux critic or Windows fan. For the last many years, I've made my living developing applications to run under Linux - I'm typing this message on a laptop running Ubuntu... But the shack PC downstairs is running Windows 10 and that seems likely to remain the case into the indefinite future...

For radio I prefer linux Kubuntu. It is stable, and is a RAM saver. It can be easily  updated/upgraded. All radio programs I wanted were within the Amateur Radio section within the official deposit. Except for Quisk which is updated very often by the developer and became quickly my preferite sdr application. Linux allows the user to try to fix little issues. With Windows I had just to hope it will work, so I switched to Linux.
