heil ham radio PINE BOARD PROJECT
« on: November 06, 2022, 08:09:30 AM »

Has anyone build the Pine board project. I want to build it. I only have one question. I am not sure where and how to connect the key. I only want to run CW. Don' need the preamp at this time. Other circuits I've seen connect the key to the cathode and other side to ground, sometimes thru a coil. Is this correct? Am I going to have high voltage on the key? I don't think so but want to be sure.
Thanks TOM N8CHR

It would help if you at least post a link , if not the diagram itself!

I have built the AM transmitter but am not a CW operator.  This is the schematic for the transmitter: https://heilhamradio.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/trans-AM-768x1071.jpg  From my limited knowledge of tube type CW transmitters, I would guess that you would key it from the cathode.

You’ll want to leave off the 6V6 modulator and the
4 Hy choke as well for CW work.

Then evaluate the signal with a keyed oscillator
for chirp - that isn’t a concern for AM operation.

These simple and 'primitive' transmitters usually used cathode keying.

VT's reply/link should be considered.  My first contact almost became my last!  I was using a Heatkit AT-1 transmitter which had cathode keying. My sweaty hand got across the key and the pain felt like a mallet had smashed my hand.
