How are you promoting amateur radio
« on: November 09, 2022, 03:34:48 PM »

This question is rarely asked but how are you promoting amateur radio?

I am teaching introduction classes in morse, demonstrating kits and gear, preparing materials, organizing classes, and explaining regulations.
The key element with kids though is you have to make things interesting and fun.

Every year ( July ) we set up at CampJJ.
Its a  camp for special needs children.
Each child has a one on one teen counselor
And the campers learn social skills, crafts, and learning improvement.
Us staff members are always at hand to monitor and assist.
Since i started introducing morse code the staff has noticed that some of the campers are more focused in learning, and they want the radio club to keep coming back.
We are usually tired by the end of the week but its a lot of fun and great laughs.

Simple,

By Screaming endlessly on weekends (I work days) from 7 am to midnight my call sign and then if I get a reply by responding with 59 Thank You or 599 TU, over and over and over to every  dx-pedition that has appeared on the upper HF bands.

My wife, my kids, my neighbors, the neighbor kids, my dogs the neighbor dogs and even the humming birds in the feeder outside of my ham shack are now aware of what ham radio is!

Why? What prompts people to think it requires advertising or promotion?

Almost need to reverse the query :)   I was in two clubs before I took my first exam.  Was club secretary a few months later after I passed my exam.  Plan and enjoy FD, SS, and general excursions.  Teach classes.  Mentored hundreds of newbies.  I AM ham and quite radioactive!

Why? What prompts people to think it requires advertising or promotion?

And to try to undo impressions like the one above :|  We need new motivated amateurs willing to shine and share their talent and experiences since I'm getting old and worn out.

I happened to see one of those billboards when I was traveling to the NE area of the US a couple of years ago. It looked rather nice and designed very well.

Absolutely, I saw one of his billboards too, and got a picture of it...

Five years of running an average of three license exam sessions a month. I finally burned out right before the pandemic shut everything down and I decided to let the younger people take it over.

I've never really promoted any hobby. The people that are attracted to anything are going to find it... I have told people about the hobby if they seemed interested I suppose

Well tick tock does have a wide following by teens so it could be a good venue.

That’s a non-answer. I’ve seen and read others suggest we need to bring in more people but no one ever described why. The typical “bring in new people” or the fashionable “grow the hobby” themes don’t explain why.

The hobby is growing as evidenced by licensee numbers and continues to increase. It has historically always been increasing in quantity. What is wrong that you think needs to be fixed? And why.

If you are advocating we take some prospective action, I assume you have good reasons for that and can explain why you think it’s necessary.

The better question is why not promote HR.

Walk down the street and ask random people if they even heard of HR. You get many blank stares.

Never knowing is not the same as choosing or not choosing to be involved.

If you ever bought anything from DX Engineering, one of my students may have helped you out.

I've gotten many people involved in the service over the years. Some were CBers who were curious about other bands and enhanced privileges. Others were electronics engineers and tinkerers (such as myself) who wished for an outlet to apply their creative skills. Still others weren't drawn to the technical aspect so much as they were the ability to help out in times of need.

Like angling for large game fish, you can't push the ARS on anybody. You have to find the lure which works best and demonstrate a practical way for them to realize their interests. At that point, the hobby/service basically sells itself.
