Install and Configure VarAC.
« on: November 09, 2022, 05:34:24 PM »

I have a Flex 6500 and Windows 10 computer. I have been using the full, licensed version of VARA in Winlink for some time now and it has worked well.
Now, I wanted to try VarAC.   I have a really basic question for you on this VarAC.
I had a VARA HF running successfully in the past for my Winlink (v4.6.1) it was in a folder labeled VARA
When I downloaded VarAC, I put it into its own folder. I think that was wrong and the reason it could not find the .exe file.
Tonight, I unzipped the VarAC zip file inside the original VARA folder. Then, I tried to configure it for rig, etc. I tried both Flex and Kenwood Generic.   Now, I get a different error code: "ADIF File Misconfiguration - ADIF File Directory does not exist"
Was I supposed to install this new program (VarAC) inside the existing VARA folder? The reason I think so is, in Settings - VARA file path, it shows "C:\VARA\VARA.exe which is the executable for the original VARA program.
Has anyone successfully installed VarAC on top of VARA and configured it?     Many Thanks, Jim   KD1I

My guess is the VarAC program is expecting to be installed in its normal folder, and tries to go in and out of directories from there to access the ADIF file, but since you changed the folder it couldn't find the directories it wanted.
I want to know why this happened:
"I think that was wrong and the reason it could not find the .exe file."
I think when I first installed it, windows couldn't find the .exe either, and I had to do a search across all of C:\ to find it. But, you can manually pin the .exe file to start and windows will eventually be able to link it to the search function. The .exe file after you extract the download is located at:
C:\Users\[your user]\Downloads\VarAC_V[version]\VarAC.exe

Keep Vara in its original folder and let VarAC install in its own folder. .  In VarAC's setup window is a place to type in the path to VARA.

OK, so if I understand correctly, I should have unzipped it in the downloads folder and let it install where it may. I had created a folder "VARAC" and unzipped it inside that folder.   Looks like that was not correct.   I'll delete the folders I created and try again.  Thank you !       73, Jim     KD1I

Progress. I had an earlier version of VARA installed. I just upgraded to version 4.6.5. from their website.
I can launch VarAC but only as an administrator (strange) but I still get ADIF file directory does not exist when I configure settings and then SAVE and EXIT.
Moving forward but not yet a solution.      Jim

OK, all working now. Problem was an earlier version of VARA itself and I overcomplicated the file structure. Once I created a folder, VARAC, and unzipped the zip file into that folder it just worked.  Now to learn to use it properly.
Thanks for the help.   73, Jim
